Cell Phones, Technology, and Childcare
As we walked toward the parkâDebbie with Taylor, the child she cared for, and I with my son, MatisseâDebbie stood still in front of the public library to check her cell phone. The phoneâs red light was flashing. There were three messages awaiting her. Debbie explained that Molly, who was working that day, was to meet her at the library before storytime to tell her what she was doing for the day, so she was expecting Mollyâs call. Debbie added just before listening to the messages that âif it was too cold, Molly said that we could go by her [employerâs home], but that if it was nice, we could go to the park.â Debbie listened to the messages: none from Molly, but one from Hazel and two from a friend who was looking into booking a flight to Atlanta for Debbie, Shamin (another sitter from Grenada), and a few others for the Caribbean Carnival weekend. We continued toward the park, but there were no signs of Molly or Hazel. The park was surprisingly empty for that time of the morningâperhaps the sixty-degree weather with cool winds didnât help. As soon as we entered the park, I sneezed several times in a row. Debbie was convinced that I was suffering from allergies. We stood on the ramp that led to the infant playground without entering once we noticed that no one we knew was inside the play area. With impatience and concern over my excessive sneezing, Debbie decided to find out where Hazel was instead of waiting for her and called her on the cell phone. Hazel answered and told Debbie that she was ânow cominâ to the park.â We awaited her arrival.
